Termites are often called white ants, but they are anything but ants. Ants are in fact more related to bees and wasps, whereas termites are more related to cockroaches. They are pale and white most of the time though, but this really depends on the species involved, as there are also black and brown termites.
The importance of termite identification is so that you can avoid further damage to your home, in the rare event that you suddenly encountered termites in your premises. Knowing what do termites look like goes a long way towards avoiding getting fleeced by a pest control company and in fact, knowing whether you even need to call in one.
Termites rarely show themselves, especially for subterranean species, so that means you need to be vigilant and know whether the insects you encounter are actually termites or not. If you are really ignorant, a pest control operator could dupe you into believing there really are termites in your house, and bill you a hefty priced, termite treatment program.
