Most women may feel that when they are in the NICU that they can not help to take care of their premature infant. Well, that’s really not the case at all. Normally, the nurses will try to help you to do as much as possible with your infant as long as you do not hurt yourself in the process. Keep in mind that premature babies will remember your smell and will begin to respond better to you the more that you are around them. So, one of the first things that you can start doing is to change their diapers as often as possible and even take their temperature when needed. You can also help to feed them as well. If this is your first time then the nurses will help you learn how to feed your infant.
In addition, mothers can also help with their premature infant by pumping some milk from your breast. It appears that the breast milk is what’s best for the babies, especially a premature baby. Basically, everything that a baby needs is inside the breast milk. So, if at all possible try to breast feed your infant. The breast milk should really help your baby thrive and it may even help your baby to go home sooner than normal.
